Acupuncture is a time-tested method that has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years. It involves thin needles that are placed in specific acupuncture points around the body. These points stimulate the body and facilitate optimal healing and function.

Acupuncture can treat a variety of conditions and is particularly effective with ailments such as headaches, musculoskeletal pain, and arthritis. Acupuncture tends to promote a deep tissue relaxation and can help relieve anxiety and stress as well, while treating pain by stimulating the body to improve circulation, decrease inflammation and relaxing the surrounding musculature at the site of the injury. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is believed that all pain is rooted in blocked energy or “Qi.” Acupuncture releases the flow of this energy. One modern theory even suggests that acupuncture blocks the pain receptors and reduces the perception of pain.

After an initial evaluation with your acupuncturist, he or she will strategically place thin needles in different parts of your body that are specific to your condition. The needle depth and the location where the needles are placed varies from person to person. A licensed acupuncturist is trained on safety precautions to minimize risk regarding needle depth and only uses sterile needle techniques. Most people will feel a relatively mild, dull sensation from the needles. It is quite common to feel a deep relaxation after the treatment.

Results will vary depending on a person’s individual condition. Some feel relief after the first treatment. Most people can expect to feel at least some improvement after 8-12 sessions of acupuncture.
